Light shared is light multiplied

Join SciCook at SciEats to celebrate Diwali together: an evening of food, color, light, music and community. Open to all.

What is Diwali?

Diwali (Deepavali, meaning "row of lights") is the Festival of Lights, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and many Buddhists in India and around the world. It marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Families light lamps, decorate their homes with rangoli, share sweets and come together with friends and neighbors.

Festive Thali

A thali is a traditional Indian platter that brings a complete, balanced meal together on one plate. Two options:

  • Vegetarian / Vegan thali: appetizer, two vegetable entrées, roti (Indian flatbread), rice, salad and mithai (Indian sweets)
  • Non-vegetarian thali: appetizer, one vegetable and one non-vegetarian entrée, roti, rice, salad and mithai

Masala Chai

Chai is India’s everyday drink of hospitality: black tea simmered with milk and warming spices such as ginger, cardamom, cinnamon and clove.

Diyas and Rangoli

A diya is a small clay oil lamp. Lighting diyas welcomes light, hope and good fortune. Rangoli is colorful art made on the floor with colored powders, rice or flower petals to welcome guests.

One Community Rangoli and a Chain of Light

Together we will create one big community rangoli, with everyone adding color so the design is completed by all of us as one community. Then we will gather in a circle for a diya ceremony, passing the flame from lamp to lamp to form a chain of light, in the spirit of one community.

Indian Classical Music and Dance

Enjoy Indian classical music and dance throughout the evening.
