SciCook ("SciCook," "we," "us") is a San Diego 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect through www.scicook.org (the "Site"), how we use it, and the choices you have. We collect only what we need to run our programs and keep in touch with our community, and we never sell your personal information.
Information we collect
Information you give us. When you sign up for our newsletter, contact us, register for a class or event, volunteer, or donate, we may collect your name, email address, phone number, and any details you choose to share in a form, such as your organization, availability, or questions. For cooking classes and events, we may ask about dietary needs or food allergies so we can keep participants safe.
Donations. Online donations are processed by our payment provider, Stripe. Your card details go directly to Stripe and are never stored by SciCook. We receive your name, email address, donation amount, and date so we can thank you and provide a receipt.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our Site and hosting provider may automatically record basic technical information such as your browser type, device, pages visited, and approximate location based on your IP address.
Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the Site, such as which pages are most visited. Google Analytics uses cookies and collects information like your device type, browser, and pages viewed. It does not tell us who you are. You can learn more in Google's privacy policy, and you can opt out using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout) or by blocking cookies in your browser.
How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Respond to your messages and requests
- Manage class, workshop, and event registrations
- Coordinate volunteers
- Process donations and send receipts and thank-you notes
- Send our newsletter and updates, if you've signed up
- Keep our programs safe, including accommodating dietary needs and allergies
- Understand and improve how our Site is used
- Meet our legal and financial reporting obligations
How we share your information
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We share it only:
- With service providers who help us operate, such as our website, forms, and newsletter provider (SleekCMS), our payment processor (Stripe), and our analytics provider (Google Analytics), and only as needed to provide their services to us
- When required by law, or to protect the safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, or the public
- With your permission
Photos at our events
We sometimes take photos and videos at community meals, classes, and events to share our work. If you would prefer not to be photographed, or would like a photo of you removed from our Site or social media, just let a team member know or email us.
Children's privacy
Our Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them online. Children who take part in our classes must be registered by a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices
- Email: You can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time using the link in any email.
- Access, correction, and deletion: You can ask us to show you, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing [email protected]. Some donation records must be kept for tax and legal purposes.
- Do Not Track: Our Site does not currently respond to browser "Do Not Track" signals.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described above, or as required for legal, tax, and accounting reasons.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information. No website or online service is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Links to other websites
Our Site links to other sites, including SciEats (thescieats.com), Instagram, WhatsApp, and Stripe. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their practices.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
