Nutritional Education for Kids — La Mesa Spring Valley School District

SciCook is thrilled to announce the launch of our after-school nutrition education program in partnership with the La Mesa Spring Valley School District. This initiative brings hands-on cooking demonstrations, nutrition workshops, and food science activities directly to elementary school students — right where they learn.

Why Nutrition Education Starts Young

Research consistently shows that food habits established in childhood tend to persist throughout life. When children learn early that healthy food can be delicious, exciting, and accessible, they develop lifelong relationships with nourishment that protect their physical and mental health for decades to come.

That's why SciCook developed a curriculum that makes nutrition education fun and engaging — not a lecture, but an adventure. Students learn about macronutrients through interactive games, explore flavors from different world cuisines, and get their hands dirty (and colorful) preparing simple, healthy snacks they can recreate at home.

What the Program Includes

  • Weekly after-school cooking demonstrations
  • Age-appropriate nutrition science activities
  • Take-home recipe cards for families
  • Monthly nutrition challenges and rewards
  • Connection to SciCook's broader community programs

Early Results

Just weeks into the program, participating teachers report that students are asking more questions about what they eat at lunch, bringing different snacks from home, and excitedly sharing what they've learned with their families. One third-grade teacher noted: "My students now debate the merits of different vegetables like they're food scientists. It's remarkable."

We're grateful to the La Mesa Spring Valley School District for this partnership and to the families who have embraced the program. This is just the beginning — we look forward to expanding this initiative to more schools across San Diego.
